This is Kareema*. Her family got the one in two hundred chance of being chosen to leave their refugee situation and permanently resettle to a third country. They were assigned to Toledo, Ohio.
Kareema is bright and creative, but she didn’t know any English before she came here. If she’s average, it will take her five years in school in the US before she can do academic work at grade level.
In the meantime, she will need our help to complete homework and achieve some very important early successes. Her relationships with our teachers will help her love learning in America. Our translators will help her understand concepts of Math and Science while we give her language skills time to catch up. We’re hoping to see her graduate and reach her God-given potential.
Kareema’s future is here in the US. Sadly, she will likely never be able to go back to her country of birth.
